Threads
Been some time since I’ve been on this blog. Have you been following the Modern Quilt Guild Challenge. If not, be sure to go on and see the beautiful quilts.
Some of us are fairly new to quilting and there is so much to learn.
For example, I found a thread I love for long arm quilting. This got me wondering, what thread do you like and why?
Post your response and you will be entered into a drawing for some quilting thread!
Feel free to share what you are working on by posting a picture on Spokane Modern Quilt Guild Facebook.
Keep checking back as we will be posting new articles, tips and techniques, challenges and show and tells on this site.
Happy Sewing!
Modern Quilt Guild 4th and final challenge
Have you been keeping up on the Modern Quilt Guild challenge? You might want to consider it, they are giving, (yes giving) away a Janome, Horizon 7700, my favorite machine. The fourth and final challenge instructions are on this site. Modern Quilt Guild
In addition to the Modern Quilt Guild challenge, Spokane Modern Quilt Guild is doing a challenge. FreeSpirit fabric has donated fabrics from Jay McCarroll’s Habitat line. The challenge was to create a placemat using these fabrics and solids, no other prints.
Placemats are displayed at The Top Stitch and the creativity is exciting to see. Check out Spokane Modern Quilt Guild on FaceBook to see the placemats online!
Fabric Challenge with Habitat fabric by Jay McCarroll
Habitat is made up of 8 prints in 3 distinct color ways – jewel tones, brights, and earth tones. In Jay’s interview with Trueup.net, he states he loves to play with contrasts and contradictions. Urban & pastoral, digital & analog, graphic & organic.
He pulls it all together with his signature color sense. These exciting eight prints didn’t necessarily “go” together but worked harmoniously. Due in part to Jay’s fashion background, there seems to be a formula in the quilting cotton world on what a collection might look like. These prints work with quilting, apparel and home dec. Jay is definitely not one to subscribe to the extra large floral, large floral with geometric undertone, medium floral, medium stripe with floral, medium stripe, small geometric and two slightly solid co-ordinates.
The Top Stitch, Modern Quilt Guild is participating in an International challenge using the Brights color way in Jay’s new line, Habitat. Each participant will be creating a placemat, using 6 fat eights to be distributed upon arrival (we’ll let you know when it arrives). Only add solids to highlight these amazing fabrics. To qualify, you will need to to post your placemat picture on the modern quilt guild flickr sight and The Top Stitch flickr!
I’m excited to see what you will come up with! Happy Quilting!
Habitat fabric challenge
I’m getting pretty excited to see the Jay McCarroll fabrics and see what everyone will do with their place mat! If you are interested in participating in this upcoming challenge, please let me know before June 8.
In addition to this challenge the new “Block Party” book is out! It arrived in the shop yesterday and we have been pouring through it. A quilt a month for an entire year. I’m inspired. Wait until you see all the modern quilts using modern fabrics from the designers we love. Check it out next time you stop by The Top Stitch.
Happy Quilting!

Check out this website The Quilt Engineer! Latifah is part of the LA Modern Quilt Guild. She captures the modern wave of quilting sweeping across the country in the mini quilts, place mats and wall hangings.
A new challenge is beginning (coordinated by Latifah) with Jay McCarroll’s fabric line, “Habitat” through Free Spirit fabrics. If you would like to participate, let me know before June 8. The challenge for Spokane MQG will be a place mat. As part of the challenge only solids can be added with this line so that “Habitat” fabric is highlighted. Free Spirit will donate the Habitat fabric.
If you wish to participate, The Top Stitch will organize distribution of the fabric packets and challenge instructions, deadlines, ect. and updates will be founds on this blog.
Happy Quilting!

The following is information about the how and what of The Modern Quilt Guild.
About Us
The Modern Quilt Guild is a community of quilt guilds across the country. The online community of modern quilters is thriving and this guild grew out of a desire to also have us meet in person. The founding branch of the guild started in Los Angeles in October of 2009. Through blogs & the internet word spread quickly of the fun they were having and now branches have started popping up all over the country. We are a young organization just getting started with planning, organizing and sorting out all we will do as an association.
We encourage anyone who’s interested to join us! Beginners are welcome.
What is Modern Quilting?
Modern quilting is a new twist on the traditional art of quilting. This may mean something as simple as using a traditional quilt block and updating it in a fresh fun new way. That includes using modern fabrics, modifying the block arrangement or even the scale of the block. The piecing could be improvisational and wonky, or it could be very exact and measured, following a pattern or creating your own. The quilting could be traditional stippling, clean straight lines or a very “free” have fun, quilt as you go style. Fabrics could be upcycled vintage sheets, custom digital printed fabric, a yummy selection from one of the new modern fabric designers, or an old fabric from an ever growing stash.
Modern quilting is sometimes difficult to define because in many ways the definition is as individual as the quilter – changing from quilter to quilter. In addition to reflecting the individual personality and personal style of the quilter it also reflects the current aesthetic of the day.
Modern quilting is also about the attitude and the approach that modern quilters take. It respects the amazing artistry and talent of the tradition of quilting, while allowing the quilter to challenge the “rules”. In fact, if there were one rule in modern quilting it would be that there are no rules.
The concept of modern quilting is not meant to divide or segregate. It is meant to welcome new quilters, of all ages, to the world of quilting in a style that they can relate to. In many ways, modern quilting takes us back to the basics of the early quilters, when women of the day used the colors and styles of their time to express themselves creatively.
